Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent Mike Murray announces that the season for the National Park Service campground on Ocracoke Island has been extended until October 30, 2006. The last night to camp at the park’s campground on Ocracoke is now October 29. Reservations for the Ocracoke Campground may be made until October 8 by calling 1-800-365-CAMP or on the internet at https://reservations.nps.gov. After October 8, the campground will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The other National Park Service campgrounds on the Seashore are open as originally scheduled - Cape Point Campground through Labor Day, and Frisco and Oregon Inlet Campgrounds through October 9.

The fee for campground sites is $20/day or $10 for holders of federal Golden Age or Golden Access Passports. No more than two vehicles (including pop-up campers) and six people may occupy a single site. All campgrounds have modern rest-rooms, potable water, unheated showers, a grill, and tables. No utility connections are available. Longer than normal tent stakes are recommended due to sandy soil for tent camping. There are no shade trees and mosquitoes may be a problem. All campgrounds are within walking distance of the ocean, separated from the beach by barrier dunes. The Frisco Campground is located among sand dunes, while the others are on level ground.
