Cindy and Ben Helland (left) of Columbus, OH and Nathan Howell of Lansing, NC spent an afternoon exploring U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rescue vessels with USCG Fireman Kyle McLane at the Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet Tour this past Wednesday. This free program is provided by the National Park Service and the USCG every Sunday and Wednesday afternoon through the summer months. The USCG and its predecessor, the U.S. Lifesaving Service, have a long and distinguished heritage on the Outer Banks. This coming Monday, August 4 will be celebrated nationally as Coast Guard Day – the anniversary of the 1790 establishment of the Revenue Cutter Service, forbearer of today's USCG. (NPS Photo)
