Kathy Tevyaw Selected as Deputy Superintendent of Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price announced that Kathy Tevyaw has been selected as the Deputy Superintendent of Cape Cod National Seashore. Prior to her selection, Tevyaw served as the Acting Superintendent of New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park and as the Training Manager for Interpretation and Education in the Northeast Regional Office of the National Park Service. As Deputy Superintendent, Tevyaw will work closely with Superintendent Price and the senior management team overseeing the operation and planning for the National Seashore.

Province Lands Bike Trail Rehabilitation Continues this Month Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George E. Price, Jr. has announced that the second and final phase of the Province Lands Bike Trail rehabilitation project will soon be underway. Price said, “Construction will commence on September 8, 2009 and is expected to continue until March 6, 2010. This phase is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and will complete the rehabilitation of 4.1 miles of the 7.3 mile bike trail.”

Race Point Beach Temporarily Closed to Swimming Due to High Bacteria Levels Cape Cod National Seashore Chief Ranger Bob Grant announced today that the lifeguarded portion of Race Point Beach in Provincetown has been temporarily closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels. Water quality will be re-sampled daily until bacteria concentrations return to desired levels, at which time the beach will be re-opened to swimming. Beach activities that do not involve contact with the water, such as walking and sunbathing, are still permitted.

Off-Road Vehicle Corridor Temporary Closures Expected Soon to Protect Piping Plover Nestlings Cape Cod National Seashore's Superintendent George E. Price Jr. announced that this week Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) closures will begin due to piping plover nesting activity. Vehicle closures are for the protection of piping plovers, a species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Did You Know?
Although the kettle ponds within Cape Cod National Seashore are within 2.5 km of the ocean and have been subjected to thousands of years of salt spray, they remain low in dissolved salts. Ponds are flushed out by inflowing and outflowing groundwater, which prevents salts from accumulating.
