Hear Adventures of Summers Spent at the Seashore - Memories of a Cape Cod Childhood Program

Date: June 30, 2008
Contact: Christiana Admiral, Interpretive Ranger, 508 487 1256

Most vacations on the Cape only last for a few days, but imagine the fun of spending an entire summer at the seashore. Find out what it would be like to have the wharves and dunes as your playground during a free program, “Memories of a Cape Cod Childhood” being offered by Cape Cod National Seashore. The program will be held on Sunday, July 13, at 7 PM at Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown.

Join local author Amy Whorf McGuiggan as she shares tales and mementos from her childhood on Cape Cod. Get some fun ideas for things to do on your own vacation as you hear about beachcombing, berry picking, clambakes and playing in the waves. Sample Amy’s homemade beach plum jelly and bring a treasure to show and tell about your own special memories on Cape Cod.

Amy Whorf McGuiggan lives in Hingham, MA, but spent every summer of the 1960s and ‘70s in Provincetown with her family. The granddaughter of renowned Provincetown painter John Whorf, McGuiggan inherited his ability to capture the spirit of the unique community at the Cape’s tip. She describes her book My Provincetown: Memories of a Cape Cod Childhood as “a simple portrait of a time and place.” Her work is available for sale at the Eastern National bookstores in the Province Lands and Salt Pond Visitor Centers.

Every Sunday in July and August, at 7 PM, join a special guest for a one-hour program about the various people who have made their homes on Cape Cod.  Come each week to hear a different family’s perspective, ranging from the days of the Mayflower Pilgrims to summers spent in Provincetown in the 1960s. Juice and cookies will be served at each program in the series, which is geared towards families, and is sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore. All presentations will be held the Province Lands Visitor Center and are free, accessible and open to the public.
