Superintendent George Price announces that the Cranberry Bog Bridge, which provides access for vehicles to Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, will be closed for repairs on the nights of Tuesday, May 19 and Wednesday, May 20. There will be no vehicular access to the beach parking lot from 5:00pm to 7:00am on those nights; during the day there will be one lane of traffic open over the bridge. Pedestrian and bicycle access to Coast Guard Beach via the Nauset Bicycle Path will not be impacted by this closure. Evening beach access will be available until midnight at Marconi Beach in Wellfleet during this time.

"We apologize for the last minute decision to close the bridge for two evenings, and understand the inconvenience to visitors who wish for an evening walk on the beach," Price said. "However, this accommodation has been made for the contractor to expedite the necessary bridge work in order to have it safe and ready for the busy upcoming season. We also wanted to minimize the impact by having the closure in the evening, rather than during the daytime hours."

In fall 2014, Cape Cod National Seashore received funding from Federal Highways to bring the bridge into structural compliance and extend the life of the bridge for another 40 years. This bridge work is part of the larger Province Lands Road pavement reconstruction project.

Work to be done during the closure includes replacing rusted bolts holding up structure; installing shims at one support pile; planing the wood sub-deck; installing drainage structures at each end of bridge; installing a leveling material on the wood sub-deck; installing a waterproof membrane on bridge; laying two courses of asphalt pavement; and striping.
