They’re out of school, and they rule! Kids, that is! Resident children and those visiting Cape Cod during April vacation week are invited to join park rangers at Cape Cod National Seashore for special free programs and activities during National Park Week, April 19 through 27.  Across the country, national park sites will be hosting programs centered on the theme, “Kids in Parks.”  To cap off the week, on Saturday, April 26 the national seashore will host day-long activities focused on radio communication, Earth Day, and a whaling family at home and at sea.  Special Junior Ranger awards will be presented to children participating in programs on that day.

Saturday, April 19: The Scoop on Seals, a look at the different seals found on Cape Cod and how they’re adapted to their watery world; Salt Pond Visitor Center, Eastham, 2 PM, 45 minutes.

Sunday, April 20:  Sirens of the Sea, featuring the beauty and natural history of humpback whales; Salt Pond Visitor Center, Eastham, 1 PM, 30 minutes.

Tuesday, April 22: Where the Spark of Magic Happened and Marconi Triumphed, a short walk around the site where Guglielmo Marconi transmitted the first transatlantic wireless message in 1903. Marconi Station Site, off Route 6, Wellfleet, 2 PM, 30 minutes.

Friday, April 25: Whose Toes Are Those, a one-hour walk to look for tracks and sign left by local wildlife; Salt Pond Visitor Center, Eastham, 2 PM.

Saturday, April 26: Earth Day/Keep America Beautiful, clean-up event at Coast Guard and Nauset Light Beach parking areas. Sponsored by Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore; contact volunteer@fccns.org to sign up. 9-11 AM.

Saturday, April 26: The Wizard of Wireless, commemorates the birthday of Guglielmo Marconi, the father of radio. Radio operators making contacts with others around the world, Morse Code, and other activities for kids; Coast Guard Station, Coast Guard Beach, Eastham. 9 AM-3 PM.

Saturday, April 26: Family Fun at the Penniman House, with outdoor games, activities, and stories about the Penniman family’s life at home and adventures at sea.  Park at Salt Pond Visitor Center and ride the free shuttle to Fort Hill. 1-4 PM.  The event is sponsored by the seashore’s bookstore partner, Eastern National.

Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at Route 6 and Nauset Road in Eastham.  Open daily from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, the center includes exhibits; a museum; orientation films; staff to assist with activity planning; spectacular views of Nauset Marsh and the Atlantic; hiking and biking trails; and a well-stocked bookstore featuring books, maps, games, puzzles, and other interpretive items.

Province Lands Visitor Center opens for the season on May 1.  Located on Race Point Road in Provincetown, it’s open from 9 AM to 5 PM.  There are staff to assist with activity planning; hiking and biking trails; a bookstore featuring interpretive items like books, maps, games and puzzles; exhibits and orientation films; and an outdoor observation deck with a 360-degree view of the Outer Beach, the Gulf of Maine, Cape Cod Bay, and Provincetown.
