The historic Boxley grist mill has been a landmark in Boxley Valley for more than a hundred years. This weekend, visitors will have an opportunity to tour the mill and learn more about the history of Boxley Valley. The tours will be conducted by the National Park Service and Buffalo National River Partners on October 25, 26, and 27, from10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. From 1870 until the 1950s, this grist mill was handed down from generation to generation of the Villines family and was an important component of the community. Now, in the 21stcentury, the grist mill is under a 50-year lease with the Gorgas Science Foundation in partnership with the National Park Service. Under the terms of the lease, the Gorgas Science Foundation has accepted responsibility for stewardship and preservation of the grist mill and other historic structures on the property. The mill is not handicapped accessible, although parking is in sight of the mill and only a short walk is required to reach the four steps at the entrance. Once inside, there is a level walkway. The closest restroom and drinking water is located a couple miles north of the mill at the Lost Valley Day Use Area so visitors may want to check out that area first. Park Ranger Linda Bishop, who has conducted mill tours for many years, commented, "The beautiful Buffalo River area has so much more to offer than just pretty scenery. There is a lot of history here and you can experience that history as you step back in time by entering the grist mill and tour the first floor of this structure.
