PARK WILL BE CLOSED THANKSGIVING DAY

Hardy, VA - On Thursday, November 22, 2007, Booker T. Washington National Monument will be closed. The park is open daily year-round except for Thanksgiving Day, December 25, January 1, and other federal holidays as announced. The regular hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The park preserves the site where noted educator Booker T. Washington was born and lived in slavery for nine years. It is administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. A fourteen-minute video presentation and guided tours of the historic farm are offered. There are exhibits and a bookstore in the visitor center.

Booker T. Washington National Monument is one of 391 units of the National Park Service, the agency entrusted with the care of our nation’s natural and cultural treasures. Booker T. Washington National Monument is located in Franklin County, Virginia on Virginia State Route 122. The park is open seven days a week from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. Admission, parking, and all programs are free.

Did You Know?
The "T" in Booker T. Washington's name stands for Taliaferro. Booker found out later in life his mother had given him this as a last name but he did not describe why. He made it his middle name.
