Hardy, VA -  Writer and critic Stephanie Deutsch will present the fascinating story of the meeting of two extraordinary men: Booker T. Washington, the founder and principal of Tuskegee Institute, and Julius Rosenwald, the president of Sears, Roebuck and Company and how they formed a partnership that would profoundly affect African American communities across the South in the era leading up to the civil rights movement.

The illustrated lecture will begin in the auditorium of the Booker T. Washington National Monument visitor center at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012 and will be followed by a reception and book signing of Stephanie Deutsch's recently published book, You Need a Schoolhouse, Booker T. Washington, Julius Rosenwald, and the Building of Schools for the Segregated South.

The "T" in Booker T. Washington's name stands for Taliaferro. Booker found out later in life his mother had given him this as a last name but he did not describe why. He made it his middle name.
