Ranger Activities:

Services

Since the establishment of the first ranger in Yellowstone National Park in 1880, Park Rangers have continued to perform a widening variety of duties in our nation’s parks working in urban, suburban and rural locations. Rangers carry out a multitude of duties spanning a wide array of needs such as property protection, the interpretation of natural, historic and cultural information, enforcement of laws and regulations, management of natural resources and the operation of campgrounds, to name only a few. The Boston Support Office is available to assist park rangers in the Northeast Region in the following areas:

 Ranger Resource Protection Initiative

The BOSO is currently actively engaged in developing the Northeast Region’s Ranger Resource Protection Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to strengthen the role of Park Rangers in the Northeast Region in the areas of Resource Protection, Resource Education and Visitor Protection. The BOSO is on hand to address the comments and concerns of the parks relative to this initiative.

 Policy and Park Operations

The BOSO Lead Ranger serves as a member of Ranger leadership committees at both the regional and national levels. These committees assist with the reviews and implementation of policy and programs related to Ranger operations and park management. Armed with this knowledge, the BOSO Lead Ranger is able to offer assistance to the parks and the Northeast Region Directorate with policy issue related to park operations.

 Ranger Careers

The BOSO is accessible to both the parks and the Northeast Region Directorate to advise and assist in all matters related to the management of the Park Rangers Career Program, as well as any other Ranger-related management issue that may arise.

 Park Events and Incident Management

The priceless historical, cultural and natural resources existing in our Region’s parks often make them appealing locations for special events. The BOSO Lead Ranger is available to provide planning assistance to parks prior to an event. Further, should an incident arise in the course of an event, the BOSO can be called upon for enhanced incident management.

 Recreation Fee Program

The BOSO Lead Ranger is the designated point of contact for the Northeast Region Recreation Fee Program. This includes, but is not limited to, the Fee Demonstration Program currently ongoing at 20 parks throughout the Region. Fee collection and related questions should be directed here. For more information on the Fee Demonstration Program, check out the NPS web site at www.nps.gov/feedemo .

Wellness

The BOSO Lead Ranger also serves as the Ranger Activities Support Office contact for the National Park Service Medical, Health and Fitness program for parks in the New England Cluster. Working on the premise that "Healthy Rangers make Happy Rangers," the BOSO will gladly provide information and assistance to any Rangers with wellness questions or concerns.

 Radio Program Management

In light of new regulations, the BOSO is planning in advance for the migration from the current radio systems to the mandated narrow band requirements. Thus, under the umbrella of Ranger Activities Services, the BOSO is present to assist parks in the New England Cluster with Radio Program Management.
