(Asheville, NC)—Reconstruction operations are expected to begin in May along the 15.4-mile section of the Blue Ridge Parkway between milepost 359.7 and milepost 375.1. This section of the Parkway includes the popular Craggy Gardens Visitor Center, which is expected to remain open during the duration of the project.

Craggy Gardens Visitor Center parking areas will be reconstructed and repaved, and parking may be limited at times to one half the available parking. The Craggy Gardens Picnic Area parking area is expected to be reconstructed and resurfaced during the winter and early spring season of 2010. The Parkway will remain open to visitor traffic under flagmen-controlled one lane traffic from May 2009, when the project is expected to begin, until the expected completion in December of 2010.

Six overlooks located along this section of the Parkway will periodically and alternately need to be closed for the reconstruction. Parkway officials have stated that reconstruction of the Parkway through this section is critical due to the poor condition of the existing pavement.
