Ranger Guided Activities

WINTER FEST 2008

Please join us for any of our free programs this winter:

SNOWSHOE WALKS
Every Saturday and Sunday - January 19 through March 2
Saturdays at 10:00am; Sundays at 1:00pm
Meet at the South Rim Visitor Center

Experience the delight of winter at Black Canyon by snowshoeing with an interpretive ranger among the oaks, sagebrush, open meadows and along the rim of the canyon. No special skill is needed and if you're not fond of winter, give this activity a try.

We received some new showshoes this fall, and they are available to borrow for these walks, free of charge. Call to register and/or reserve your pair of snowshoes at (970) 249-1914 extension 423.

MOONLIGHT SKI OUTING
February 16, 7:00pm
Meet at the South Rim Visitor Center

Join the rangers to ski the South Rim Ski Trail and experience the enchantment the canyon offers by moonlight.

Please bring your own ski equipment, warm clothes, water and portable light. The South Rim Visitor Center will be open with hot beverages available.

FEBRUARY FUN FOR KIDS
February 9 and 23, 1:30pm
Meet at the Montrose Public Library

Black Canyon and the Montrose Public Library invite you to listen to stories and explore critters, snow and plants during winter. Park rangers and library staff will share their favorite winter books, activities and crafts with you. The young and the young at heart are all welcome.

WINTER STAR PARTY
February 9, 6:30pm
Meet at the South Rim Visitor Center

The night sky will be studded with many familiar winter constellations like Orion, Taurus, the Pleiades and Sirius, so be sure to join the Black Canyon Astronomy Society for this celestial winter journey. Come early if you would like to see the crescent Moon. Mars and Saturn should also be visible.

Part of this program will be inside and part outside, so dress warmly and bring binoculars. Telescopes will be on hand. Hot drinks will be available in the South Rim Visitor Center.

For more information about any of these events, or to reserve snowshoes, please call (970) 249-1914 extension 423.

All programs, except February Fun For Kids, begin and end at the South Rim Visitor Center, located at Gunnison Point on the South Rim Drive, 6 miles north of US Highway 50 on CO Highway 347, in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
