HOMESTEAD, FLORIDA – Biscayne National Park is looking for Harbor Host volunteers to live on Elliott Key. One or more positions are available from November 1, 2014, to March 30, 2015. All applicants must have their own boat.

Elliott Key, an undeveloped and remote island within the park, is popular for camping, day-use and recreation activities. It is located nine miles from the mainland and is only accessible by boat. Those selected for a position receive full housing amenities on Elliott Key. The housing is private and it includes a kitchen, living room area, laundry, bedroom, bath, air conditioning and a docking slip. There is no electrical service at the dock.

Harbor Host responsibilities consist mainly of informal interpretive roving and providing visitors with information about Elliott Key, camping, park regulations and other aspects of the park. Other responsibilities may include environmental education, resource management and facilities maintenance.

Available positions require 32 hours per week and a minimum commitment of three months. Days off are consecutive. Applicants must be able to work with limited supervision. The difficulty level of the responsibilities varies from average to strenuous and can include long periods of walking, standing and bending in the outdoors. Ideal candidates are self-starting, comfortable outdoors, resourceful and flexible.

Volunteers provide an invaluable service to national parks across the country and create memorable experiences for visitors of all ages. They greet and interact with visitors from all over the world. They help ensure that special places like Biscayne National Park are preserved and protected for future generations.
