Biscayne National Park’s Discovery Series lectures continue on Wednesday, April 9 with a presentation by Lloyd Miller, author of the upcoming book, Biscayne National Park — It Almost Wasn't. The lecture takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club at 2990 South Bayshore Drive. The series is free and open to the public.

Known for his conservation efforts through the Izaak Walton League, Miller was a founding member of the Safe Progress Association (SPA) in the 1960s. The SPA was a small, grassroots organization established to fight the creation of the Seadade petrochemical plant on the shoreline of southern Biscayne Bay. The group also fought against the creation of the city of Islandia, which consisted of most of the islands in what is today Biscayne National Park. Miller and his colleagues were successful in stopping development on both fronts, and the establishment of the park 40 years ago is due largely to their efforts. In January 2007, he was awarded the National Parks Conservation Association’s prestigious Marjory Stoneman Douglas Award for his untiring efforts on behalf of Biscayne National Park.

Details of Discovery Series lectures and other events sponsored by the park, including glass bottom boat and snorkeling trips, guided canoe trips, excursions to Elliott and Boca Chita Keys, and monthly Family Fun Fests, are available by clicking on the Activities Calendar link on the park's website at www.nps.gov/bisc/, or by calling the park's visitor center at 305-230-7275, extension 0.
