In our Visitor Center we have brand new exhibits, artifacts and award winning 26 minute film "There is no turning back" about the events leading up to and what happened here in August 1877. Ever wonder what camas was? Or want to touch the type of ammunition that the army used at Big Hole. We have a touch table that has many aspects of Nez Perce and Soldier life that you are free to pick up and look at. The Glacier Association has a very nice bookshop inside as well with many titles on Nez Perce, Military and Montana history. Proceeds from the sale of items come right back to the park to support park programing.
The 2012 Summer Speaker Series kicks off on July 7th with Redtail and his presentation on "The Horse and Native American Culture." There will be plenty of beautiful horse trappings to view. Redtail loves to show off his work and answer questions. Program times: July 7, 2012 July 8, 2012 The second weekend of Summer Speaker Series sees two of the park's favorite Nez Perce Tribal elders with Silas Whitman and Leroy Seth returning to Big Hole. This year Silas will give programs on Traditional Use and Access of Natural Resources for the Nez Perce People and Leroy will talk about Historical Perspectives of the Pow-wow as a Native Art Form. On the third weekend of our Summer Speaker Series we welcome Bob Brown, the Executive Director of the Historical Museum at Ft Missoula, and his first person presentation of Major Charles Rawn, who was Commander of Company "I" during the battle. This program is very informative and gives visitors an idea what is was like to be in the frontier army.

There is a one day only Summer Speaker on July 28, 2012, Jack Gladstone. Jack is a notes "Poet-Singer" and lecture from Montana and will give programs on American Indian myth, legend and history. August 4 and 5 are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face with our very friendly Umatilla demonstrators Michael Johnson and Shawna Gavin. They will be presenting "Stickgame" which is a lot of fun and involves everyone who attends the program. Stickgame is a very popular game on the reservations in Northwest and now you can be a part of the fun. In addition there will be demonstrations of hand weaving with rope.

August 11, 2012 will be the 135th Anniversary of the Battle of the Big Hole and Nez Perce People from around the Northwest will gather at Big Hole to honor those that were here. Part of the ceremony will be drumming and singing of Nez Perce songs. After the commemoration Mike Penny and the Nez Perce Drum will sing and drum for visitors.

Our final summer speaker of the year in Vivian Wilson and she be on hand to talk about Cradleboards, their evolution through time. Vivian is a Nez Perce Tribal Member and a National Park Service employee from Lapwai, Idaho.

Did You Know?
The battle at Big Hole National Battlefield is remembered in many ways. A Nez Perce dance, the "Duck and Dive", commemorates the capture of a Howitzer during the battle.
