Empty Saddle Ceremony

Each year near many Nez Perce tribal members travel to the Montana battlefields to honor all those who fought and died during the conflict of 1877. Commemoration programs usually begin at 10:00 am and can last until 2:00 pm. Events include a rider-less horse ceremony, pipe ceremony, and traditional drum circle. These events are free and open to the public. Photography or filming is not allowed during the ceremony. Weather conditions vary and layered clothing is encouraged. Lawn chairs or blankets for seating are also recommended.

Commemoration Schedule for 2010:

Big Hole, August 07

Bear Paw, October 02

Howitzer captured by the Nez Perce on display at Big Hole.

Did You Know?
The battle at Big Hole National Battlefield is remembered in many ways. A Nez Perce dance, the "Duck and Dive", commemorates the capture of a Howitzer during the battle.
