As of August 20, 2008, all Big Cypress National Preserve facilities are open per regularly posted schedule. This includes the Oasis Visitor Center and ORV permit office, and all campgrounds that are typically open during this time of year.

The Preserve facilities were closed in preparation for, and during Tropical Storm Fay as it passed through the area on August 19. No major damage, to resources or facilities, occurred as a result of the storm.

A great white heron scratches its neck. Notice the color of the legs.

Did You Know?
The great white heron is very similar to the great white egret. However, look closely and you will see that the heron has yellow legs, while the egret has black legs. The great white heron is found only in south Florida in the United States. It can also be found on several caribbean islands.
