National Preserve Prepares for Ernesto

Big Cypress National Preserve prepares for landfall of the tropical system "Ernesto". Effective 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 28, 2006 the Big Cypress National Preserve Visitor Center and administrative facilities will be closed.

All frontcountry campgrounds, which include Bear Island, Pinecrest, Mitchell's Landing and Midway, will be closed as of 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Additionally, all recreational backcountry access into the preserve will be closed at the same time.

Once the closure is in effect, it will remain in place until the National Park Service assesses damage following the storm, or believes that the threat of the storm has passed. Recorded updates will be posted on the following preserve telephone numbers: 239-695-1201 or 239-695-2000.

Within the preserve, the HP Williams and Oasis Wildlife Viewing Platforms are popular areas to see alligators. The best time to see large congregations of alligators is typically from January through May. Remeber not to feed or approach these dangerous animals.
