Beginning Thursday, March 3, 2011 that portion of Loop Road within Big Cypress National Preserve south of the Gator Hook Strand site and west to Crooked Culvert on Loop Road will be closed to vehicular traffic. This closure does not apply to residents of the closed area, their vendors, visitors or governmental services. If travel by these entities along the road is necessary, the use of a high clearance vehicle is strongly suggested.

Work on the road is anticipated to begin within a week and contractors will be staging equipment and materials in preparation for construction. For more information, updates and a map of the closed area click here.

Once construction begins work is anticipated to take a minimum of 13 months.

Did You Know?

A great white heron scratches its neck. Notice the color of the legs.

The great white heron is very similar to the great white egret. However, look closely and you will see that the heron has yellow legs, while the egret has black legs. The great white heron is found only in south Florida in the United States. It can also be found on several caribbean islands.
