On June 14, 2007, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced the establishment of the Big Cypress National Preserve (the Preserve) Off-Road Vehicle Advisory Committee. The primary role of the committee will be to examine issues and make recommendations regarding the management of Off-Road Vehicles in Big Cypress National Preserve.

The direction for the establishment of the committee comes form the National Park Service's (NPS) 2000 Recreational Off-Road Vehicle Management Plan for the Preserve. This plan guides the NPS in its management of ORVs within the Preserve.

As part of the ORV management plan, NPS committed to establishing the ORV Advisory Committee. In addition, the establishment of the Committee fulfills the agency’s policy of civic engagement. It is envisioned that this committee will strengthen the relationship that the NPS has with its partners and communities. The Committee will be comprised of individuals that represent (1) Sportsmen / ORV users; (2) landowners; (3) academia; (4) environmental advocates; (5) the State government, and (6) Tribal Governments.

The first public meeting of the Advisory Committee will be in late November of 2007. Further details related to the meeting will be forthcoming.
