The National Park Service recently completed new backcountry access parking facilities at Monroe Station, Skillet Strand North and Paces Dike trailheads within Big Cypress National Preserve. The access facilities will be open for public use on November 1, 2013. The facilities provide safer parking opportunities off the adjacent roadways and access to the associated off-road vehicle trails into the backcountry.
Once open the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's wildlife check station, now located at the Monument Lake Campground, will be moved back to the Monroe Station facility. The Monroe Station facility is not 100% complete. There is a phase two project that will be implemented in the near future and will complete the project in front of the station. Parking in the Florida Department of Transportation right-of-way in front of the station will no longer be allowed.
The completion of these facilities is one portion of a larger project that was analyzed through an environmental assessment in 2012.
