Bighorn Canyon NRA Preparing for the Winter
Contact: Christy Fleming, 307-548-5406
Winter will be upon us before we know it and Bighorn Canyon employees have been preparing. Lake levels remain high with a lake level of 3639.48 on September 29, 2009. However, with cold weather on its way, the campgrounds, restrooms, irrigation systems, and fishing cleaning stations have been winterized. The Horseshoe Bend Marina and Ok-A-Beh Marina are also closed for the winter. No gas is available on the lake.
Bighorn Canyon crews have winterized the Horseshoe Bend Campground. The Campground remains open year-round, but utilities at the improved sites and water to the restrooms in the campground have been have been turned off. The utility fee will not be charged again until next spring when the utilities are turned back on. The Afterbay and Trail Creek campgrounds are open. The dump and fill stations at Horseshoe Bend and near the Afterbay Campground have been winterized, as well as the fish cleaning stations at Ok-A-Beh and Horseshoe Bend. The restroom at Ok-A-Beh, the irrigation system at the Afterbay Contact Station, and water lines at MK Hill picnic area has been shut down for the winter.
Courtesy docks remain in at Horseshoe Bend, Barry’s Landing, and Ok-A-Beh. Floating restrooms are located at Black Canyon, Day Board 9, Box Canyon, and Dryhead Creek. Bighorn Canyon asks boaters to use extreme caution when going into Box Canyon as there is a large amount of driftwood that makes the area difficult to use. The Devil Canyon floating restroom has been pulled from the lake for maintenance and winterization.
Even with cooler tempuratures on the way, Bighorn Canyon still offers wonderful fall boating, fishing and hiking. All hiking trails are open and offer a variety of fall and winter scenery. Bighorn Canyon invites you to enjoy the fall colors.
