For backcountry car campers, hikers, and river users of the River Road West in and near to the Dominguez Spring trailhead as well as the Woodson’s, Jewel, Loop and Johnson’s Ranch Campsites.

Warning!
Illegal activity has occurred and is likely to continue along the International Border with Mexico. This area has experienced greater frequency of illegal activity than other sections of the park’s border.

Documented crimes in the area specified include drug smuggling, marijuana cultivation, theft of camping equipment from unattended campsites, vehicle break-ins, and observation or contact with individuals suspected of having entered the United States illegally by passing through this remote backcountry section of the park.

Campers and visitors to this area at times have felt uncomfortable by the presence of small groups of individuals on or from the Mexican side of the border.

Park Rangers and Border Patrol continue to monitor, patrol and actively seek to enforce the laws of along this remote section of the park, but cannot be in all places at all times.

Visitors should report any problems, unusual or suspicious activity to park dispatch at (432) 477-2251

Fur trading at Johnson's Ranch  

Did You Know?
The frontier economy of Big Bend relied heavily on fur trading. The furs included mostly fox, bobcat, coyote, skunk, and ringtail, but there were also a few beaver, javelina, and panther pelts, and some goat and deer hides. The price of pelts varied, but normally it was from 40¢ up to $1.00 each.
