Big Bend National Park
Cell Phone Service and Satellite Phones
Cell phone coverage map showing Big Bend as not available

As this graphic demonstrates, enhanced cell phone service is not always reliable in the Big Bend.

Big Bend is a very remote park far removed from many of the trappings of the communication networks you may be used to.

Satellite Phone
This specialty phone is the most reliable communication tool you can bring to the park. They work almost everywhere in the park except for narrow canyons such as along the Rio Grande. In emergencies, you may have to climb to get to where your sat phone can communicate with a satellite.

Don't Depend on your Cell Phone
Cell phone coverage in the Big Bend area is extremely limited. There are few areas in the park where your cell phone may work. Lower elevations and mountains often block signals; do not depend on your phone to work in the Chisos Basin or remote portions of the park.

Have a backup communications plan. If you have made arrangements to contact someone on a regular basis to inform them of your well-being, advise them as soon as possible that cell phone service will probably not be available.

Currently a cell tower is located in Study Butte. Service can be found intermittently to Panther Junction, as well as near some high ridges.

Be a Courteous User
Many of your fellow visitors to Big Bend have come here to escape the trapping of modern life, such as cell phones. As a courtesy to other visitors, please be considerate when using your cell phone by talking on the phone outside, and in a quiet voice.
