06/01/2013Location: Cerro Grande trail Fee Information: no additional fee
Join Bandelier Trails Program Manager, Dale Coker, for a hike on the Cerro Grande Route. We will meet up at the Cerro Grande trailhead at 1:00pm (Mile post 43.5, Hwy 4). Please bring water, snacks, rain gear, and extra layers of clothing (for the higher altitude). Sturdy hiking footwear is a must and hiking poles are helpful on uneven terrain.
This hike involves both on and off trail hiking. The route goes up the trail 2.3 miles to the summit of Cerro Grande (10,199 ft.) and gains approximately 1200 feet of elevation in that distance. From the summit there are magnificent views of the Valles Caldera and other areas to the south and west. We'll then go down along the east ridge of Cerro for 1.2 miles where there are great views of Los Alamos and areas to the east and south. From there we'll drop down into the Frijoles drainage and then back to the trailhead following old logging roads and elk trails, This hike is moderately strenuous most of the way to the summit but the return route is downhill or flat. Total distance for the hike is around 5 miles and should take 3 to 4 hours.
