  • Access to Frijoles Canyon Will Be Limited

Starting June 1, 2012 all access to the most visited part of the park, Frijoles Canyon, will be via a shuttle bus from the nearby community of White Rock. This is to alleviate a parking shortage created by the Las Conchas Fire. More details to follow.

Rio Grande Cut-throat trout were reintroduced into Capulin Creek in Bandelier's backcountry.

One wildlife project study currently underway at Bandelier is the reintroduction of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout into Capulin Creek on the west side of the park. The Dome Fire in 1996 rendered this watershed fishless. In 2006, 100 trout where collected from a local stream on the north side of the Jemez Mountains and transported to several different locations in Capulin Creek using five-gallon tanks strapped to backpack frames. These fish reproduced successfully in 2007 and 2008 and have increased their population to self-sustainable numbers. Managers are now considering reintroducing additional native species into Capulin Creek.
