On March 30, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009. This law designated the Baltimore National Heritage Area along with eight other new National Heritage Areas. Click to read the legislation (Public Law 111-11, Sec. 8005).
Before national designation, the State of Maryland designated the city's dense collection of cultural and natural resources as a recognized heritage area (1997) and a certified heritage area (2001). More information on the state program can be found on the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority website.

The first bloodshed of the Civil War occurred in Baltimore on April 19, 1861 when a skirmish erupted between Baltimore citizens and Union soldiers marching through the city. Five soldiers and 11 civilians were killed.
