Badlands NP Announces Seasonal Job Opportunities

BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK, Interior, S.D. - Badlands National Park is looking for candidates who are interested in working at a national park during the summer of 2012. There are many different positions available in Fee Collection, Resource Management, Maintenance, and Resource Education and Interpretation. Duties within the different areas of park operations include collecting entrance fees from visitors; staffing information desks; assisting with field work in exotic plant management, wildlife, and paleontology; and improving trails, fencing, and grounds. Selected candidates will gain worthwhile experience and learn about America's national parks.

To apply you must be a US citizen and be 18 years of age in addition to having enough education or work experience to qualify for the positions. The summer season generally runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but some positions start in the spring and may work later into the fall. These summer positions will be advertised on www.usajobs.gov now through June. You will need to check the website often to find opening and closing dates. The open application periods may be short for some positions. Individuals must have Internet access as the application process is done entirely online. Forever Resorts, the concession that operates the Cedar Pass Lodge and Campground within the Park, has announced a new manager. Darla Cook began managing the operation in December and she will move from Arizona to South Dakota for the summer. Cedar Pass Lodge will also be filling various seasonal positions this spring at the gift shop, campground and restaurant.  Contact the concession directly for employment opportunities available at Cedar Pass Lodge by calling 605-433-5460.

During the Age of Dinosaurs, a warm, shallow sea covered the Great Plains, including what is now Badlands. Since dinosaurs were land creatures, no fossils of these animals have been found in the park. Giant marine lizards called mosasaurs swam in the ancient sea, along with sea turtles and fish.
