Badlands National Park Announces Federal Holiday Closing

(Interior, S.D.) Through an executive order, President Bush announced that Friday, December 26, 2008 will be a holiday for all federal employees. Following this order, Badlands National Park, Deputy Superintendent Larry Johnson has announced that the Ben Reifel Visitor Center will be closed on December 26. The visitor center will also be closed on Thursday, December 25, 2008, and Thursday, January 1, 2009, for the holidays.

Sandstone caprock balanced atop eroding sediments, an example of a toadstool or hoodoo

The badlands are some of the fastest eroding landscapes on earth with erosion rates averaging 1” per year in their fragile layers. However, in areas where sandstone is found, the erosion rate may be 1” in 500 years. Often, toadstools form when surrounding sediments erode beneath a sandstone caprock.
