BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK, S.D. - Superintendent Dr. Paige Baker has lifted the smoking ban at Badlands National Park. The ban was put into effect July 20th to protect against the threat of wildland fire. The fire danger has decreased due to recent cool and damp weather. Visitors are once again allowed to smoke out-of-doors in Badlands National Park. The public is still urged to use care when smoking. Please remember to extinguish all smoking materials.

Open campfires are NOT permitted at any time in Badlands National Park.

The 1928 bill originally proposing a park in the South Dakota badlands used the name -Teton National Park - in the hopes of avoiding the negative-sounding name of Badlands. Teton was a title later applied to Grand Teton National Park.
