Visitor Centers

Ben Reifel Visitor Center

Located at park headquarters, the Ben Reifel Visitor Center reopened in 2006 with new exhibits, a 95-seat, air conditioned theater, a new park film, Land of Stone and Light, and improved classroom and restroom facilities. The Badlands Natural History Association operates an outlet here with postcards, books, videos, posters, and other educational materials on the park and its resources.  

Parking is located in front of the visitor center. Bus and RV parking are also available. Open year round.

 

White River Visitor Center

Located on the Pine Ridge Reservation on Highway 27, the White River Center is operated by the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Authority, and offers a staffed information desk, park orientation movie, exhibits, restrooms, and water. Summer only.

Amphitheater

The Amphitheater is in the Cedar Pass Campground, near the Ben Reifel Visitor Center.   It is accessible by a developed path from the parking area or campground.   Each evening in the summer, park rangers offer a 40-minute slide presentation on some aspect of Badlands National Park.

Picnic Areas

Picnic tables are located near the Cedar Pass Campground.   Picnic areas are also established at the Journey Overlook and on the Conata Road; however, there is no water available.   Remember that open campfires are not permitted anywhere in the park, including picnic areas.

Overlooks

Scenic overlooks and wayside exhibits provide off-road parking.   Restroom facilities and water are not available.

Cedar Pass Campground

 winter -  $10 per site

"First Come, First Served" only

  • Campground Hosts on site Memorial Day through Labor Day
  • No campfires allowed

 

Sage Creek Campground

Late summer at Sage Creek campground

Fee:  Free
"First Come, First Served" only

  • No Water
  • Pit toilets
  • Campground is used by horseback riders frequently
  • Accessible from the unpaved Sage Creek Rim Road
  • Vehicles must have high clearance to travel the Sage Creek Rim Road
  • No campfires allowed

Cedar Pass Lodge

The Cedar Pass Lodge, located south of the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, offers food service and air conditioned cabins from May until the season ends in mid-October.   It has a gift shop, restrooms, and public telephone.   For reservations, call (605) 433 - 5460 or access www.cedarpasslodge.com.
