Event Details
On and around the winter solstice, the sun sets in alignment with the north wall of West Ruin. At 4:30pm a ranger will give a presentation about archaeoastronomy and the Pueblo calendar in the Great Kiva before leading visitors to the best solstice vantage point. Arrive no later than 4:45pm if you wish to see the sunset alignment at 5:00pm, and please bring a flashlight. Following the program, the Visitor Center historic district will be lit with 2,000 beautiful luminaria bags. Luminarias are a centuries-old tradition in New Mexico. The Friends of Aztec Ruins will serve hot chocolate and cookies, and the Western National Parks Association bookstore will stay open for holiday shopping.
