  • Museum Closed Starting October 27, 2014

    The Aztec Ruins museum will be closed starting Monday, October 27, 2014 to prepare for new exhibits to be installed in April 2015. The visitor center, video, and self-guided trail will remain open.

Every year Aztec Ruins hosts an Evening of Lights to celebrate New Mexico traditions. Watch a winter solstice alignment, stroll through luminaria and lantern displays, watch cultural demonstrators work on traditional crafts, and warm up with hot cocoa and cookies.

Aztec Ruins Receives Grant to Retrace Part of Old Spanish Trail
Aztec Ruins received a Connecting Trails to Parks grant to research the Old Spanish Trail near Aztec, design a section of the National Historic Trail as a multi-use trail from historic downtown Aztec into the national monument, and tell the story of the Old Spanish Trail in waysides and other media.

Despite being surrounded by a modern community, Aztec Ruins offers habitat for a number of species. The high desert and riparian environments serve as home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Large mammals commonly seen are mule deer; less common visitors have been cougars and black bears.
