Hamilton Grange Foyer

The foyer is the first view that a guest visiting Hamilton would have seen. Centered in this room is a marble bust of Hamilton by Guiseppe Ceracchi depicted as a Roman senator, which Hamilton sat for in 1791 or 1792. An inital terra cotta version of the bust was sent to Italy, where a marble version was carved. The bust cost Hamilton $620. The Hamilton family kept the original bust for many years, until it was sold. The bust in The Grange today is a copy of the original.

On the floor in the foyer is a marble-imitation stretched canvas painted mat. This flooring style would have provided a stately appearance at a fraction of the cost.
