The
Trails to Hidden Canyon and Observation Point
TRAILHEAD:
These are
strenuous hikes
usually done separately. The 1.1-mile paved trail to Hidden
Canyon is cut into solid rock in places, and climbs 1,000
feet. The 3.7-mile trail to Observation Point climbs 2,200
feet; both are accessed from the Weeping Rock Parking Area
and receive moderate use in summer and on spring weekends.
It's about a 3 hour round trip to Hidden Canyon; about 6 hours
to Observation Point and back. These trails features slickrock
formations, sheer cliffs and narrow canyons. Stay back from
cliff edges. They can be unstable or
slippery because sand or pebbles act as ballbearings on slickrock.
Hidden
Canyon is a water-carved gorge between Cable Mountain and The
Great White Throne. The trail ends at the mouth of Hidden
Canyon; you may wish to take more time and walk up along the dry
streambed. Grottoes and water-formed features decorate the
canyon walls, including a small arch found on the right wall .5
mile upstream from the canyon mouth.
The
trail to Observation Point branches off the East Rim Trail and
climbs up to the top of East Mesa, which is covered with
ponderosa pine, Gambel oak and manzanita. The trail ends at an
overlook with views of the Great White Throne, Cable Mountain,
the West Rim, Angels Landing and Zion Canyon.
