Use
of Zion's slot canyons is increasing at dramatic rates. Use of Mystery Canyon, for
example, has increased 500% in the past five years. New zoning and associated public use
limits will go into effect in 2003 for a number of Zion's popular canyons.
Primitive Zone: Limit will be 50 people per day. Areas include Left Fork
(Subway), Pine Creek Canyon, Keyhole Canyon and Orderville Canyon. |
Pristine Zone: Limit will be twelve persons per day. Areas include Mystery
Canyon, Behunin Canyon, and many of Zion's other slot canyons. |
| Research
Natural Areas: Effective 2002. Recreational use is not permitted. Areas include
Goose Creek and Parunaweap. |
Existing
use limits will continue for the Zion Narrows, LaVerkin Creek, and the West Rim pending
the completion of a backcountry management plan.
