Use of Zion's slot canyons is increasing at dramatic rates. Use of Mystery Canyon, for example, has increased 500% in the past five years. New zoning and associated public use limits will go into effect in 2003 for a number of Zion's popular canyons.

Primitive Zone: Limit will be 50 people per day. Areas include Left Fork (Subway), Pine Creek Canyon, Keyhole Canyon and Orderville Canyon.

Pristine Zone: Limit will be twelve persons per day. Areas include Mystery Canyon, Behunin Canyon, and many of Zion's other slot canyons.

Research Natural Areas: Effective 2002. Recreational use is not permitted. Areas include Goose Creek and Parunaweap.

Existing use limits will continue for the Zion Narrows, LaVerkin Creek, and the West Rim pending the completion of a backcountry management plan.
