Yosemite National ParkPlanning UpdateVolume 4, Spring 1997 |
| Yosemite Lodge |
One of the greatest impacts of the 1997 flood was on the Yosemite Lodge, which has lost the use
of 50% of its guest rooms and all employee housing. It was already known that many of these
facilities were in danger of flooding. But the effects of the January flood were even greater than
what the General Management Plan and Concession Services Plan anticipated.
The Valley Implementation Plan was to present three alternatives for relocating these facilities. Now, with the need to make these facilities available to the public as quickly as possible, the Yosemite Lodge is being addressed in a separate plan. NPS staff are working with various interested publics to develop a single alternative for broad public review. This plan will focus on the removal of facilities from the flood plain and riparian zone, reduction in lodging units as called for in the Concession Services Plan, reduced traffic in the heart of the complex, and retention of Sunnyside Campground. Various groups -- environmental, climbing, Native American, and recreational -- and the Yosemite Concession Services staff have assisted the park, through on-site walk-throughs and discussion, in this effort to ensure a balancing of needs in the redesign. This planning project will be featured in great detail in the next Planning Update, expected next week. |
