Yosemite National ParkPlanning UpdateVolume 4, Spring 1997 |
| Dear Friends of Yosemite,
|
Since the flood of early January, I have heard from many of you. We have been so busy with
emergency repairs that it has been difficult to respond, but we deeply appreciate all of your input
and support. I have seen countless letters, newspaper articles, and editorials, and most have
encouraged us to use our response to the flood to advance the goals of the General Management
Plan. Two themes have emerged: do it right and do it as soon as possible!
It is true that the flood damaged many of the facilities we were already planning to relocate or remove. In working on the Valley Implementation Plan for the past three years, we have been evaluating alternatives for moving facilities out of riparian areas (including the 100-year floodplain), meadows, and major scenic and visitor use areas. The flood has simply given us a way to validate our plans, and it has certainly confirmed the wisdom of the General Management Plan. Response from the public since the flood indicates it is important that we maintain our goals. We are completing draft plans to put before you for review and comment before summer. This will allow us to move forward as quickly as possible with implementing the goals of the General Management Plan while reopening facilities. As we have been able to review our planning in light of the flood damage, we find we will be doing more than just repair work. There will be a lot of activity in Yosemite over the next year, and beyond! We realize that there are many people who have been affected by the flood and the closures, and many others who have a special interest in the flood recovery effort. I've asked my staff to dedicate time to keeping you informed about the status of our many projects. This newsletter will give an overview of all of the major projects affecting the Park. Future newsletters, including one in the next week or so, will focus on details of specific projects. It is our intent to learn from the mistakes of the past, and make Yosemite better for the resources and its visitors as we bring this unique place into the next century and a new era. B. J.
