Bob
Landis - Bison Herd Protects Calf from Wolves
On March 20, 2005 Bob Landis
was in the area known as Little America, below Specimin Ridge. He spotted
a member of the Agate Creek Pack watching a bison herd. Then he saw
several other members of the pack walking to the left. Suddenly they
stopped, and got into a stalking position, with their heads down. He
looked in the direction they were looking and spotted a lone bison that
was a little less than one year old. As the wolves started running,
the young bison spotted them. As the wolves got closer, the bison beat
a hasty retreat back to the herd. Several larger bison in the herd turned
toward the wolves to offer a line of protection for the calf. The wolves
decided that they weren't hungry enough to take on a full-grown bison
and they moved on.
