Wolf Series

Wolf chasing a coyoteMacNeil Lyons (Formal Education Office Park Ranger) shot this series of photos near the Gardiner River in the northwest section of Yellowstone National Park (larger image)

A series of four photos showing a wolf chasing a coyote away from a carcass.
Defeated, the coyote watches as the wolf returns to the carcass

The confrontation

A wolf moves in to take over an elk carcass on which coyotes are feeding. The coyotes are reluctant to give up their prize, but the wolf, a top-tier predator, is very persuasive.

  1. The wolf moves in to claim a carcass from a coyote.

  2. A coyote sneaks up behind the wolf, and actually nips it in the haunches.

  3. The wolf turns and gives chase.

  4. The coyote escapes unharmed.

The wolf returns to the carcass.
