This Month in Yellowstone
Snowloads Diminish and
Lion Geyser Roars

Hamilton Store, next to Old Faith Inn, Shruggs off its winter snowload.

When the roads in Yellowstone are clear enough to safely allow cars on them, but the parking lots have not yet been cleared of snow, the roads open to administrative travel by park staff. On March 13, the road from Mammoth to Old Faithful opened for administrative travel for the first time this year. Tom Cawley (Web Coordinator) decided it would be a good idea to drive the road and take some video for the March edition of This Month in Yellowstone. You will see that bison were holding meetings in the middle of the road and that one bull elk was dining on roots in an eroding hillside. The only geyser that erupted during this visit was Lion Geyser on Geyser Hill. It was photographed from the parking area in front of the Lower General Store.
