This Month in Yellowstone
The Owlets Have Fledged

On June 15, while crossing the lawn between Albright Visitor Center and the Administration Building in Mammoth, Jim Peaco (Park Photographer) noticed staff members on the sidewalk and on each of the three balconies on the Admin. Building all looking at the Cottonwood trees in the lawn. It took just a moment for Jim to realize that the great horned owlets that he had been watching in a nearby nest had fledged and that they were now perched in plain sight in the cottonwoods. He ran up to his office to collect his Canon EOS ID and 600 mm EF Image Stabilizer lens. A short while later he was standing on the third floor balcony shooting photos. One of the owlets slipped off its branch and fell, wings fluttering as he dropped, about 8 feet to another perch. Now it was at eye level for Jim and the you can see the photographic results below.

Thanks Jim, for your wonderful support of the ‘This Month in Yellowstone’ Web feature.
