Month in Yellowstone
The Owlets Have Fledged
On June 15, while crossing the lawn between Albright Visitor Center
and the Administration Building in Mammoth, Jim Peaco (Park Photographer)
noticed staff members on the sidewalk and on each of the three balconies
on the Admin. Building all looking at the Cottonwood trees in the
lawn. It took just a moment for Jim to realize that the great horned
owlets that he had been watching in a nearby nest had fledged and
that they were now perched in plain sight in the cottonwoods. He ran
up to his office to collect his Canon EOS ID and 600 mm EF Image Stabilizer
lens. A short while later he was standing on the third floor balcony
shooting photos. One of the owlets slipped off its branch and fell,
wings fluttering as he dropped, about 8 feet to another perch. Now
it was at eye level for Jim and the you can see the photographic results
below.
