Pine
Marten at Lake-Fishing Bridge
Bill Wise (Interpretive Park Ranger) noticed his cat
looking out the front window of his residence in the Lake-Fishing Bridge
area. Since Matt-the-kat was looking more intently than usual, Bill
went over to see what was so interesting. To his surprise, he saw a
pine marten staring back at the cat. Since then Bill has seen the marten
often, usually hunting for mice and voles under and around the buildings
in the residential area.
One day in early January, while Matt-the-kat and the marten were having
another stare-down session, Bill decided to try to get a photo of the
marten. He stepped out of the door and the marten scampered up a nearby
tree. In an attempt to chase Bill off, the marten ran down a few branches
and made a low "Hughh, Hughh" vocalization. That is when Bill snapped
the photo you see here.
