Erik Hendrickson - Scoping Yellowstone

Erik Hendrickson uses a digital camera and a spotting scope to take photos.

Erik Hendrickson is the son of a Park Ranger. He lived and played in the Mammoth Hot Springs area as a child. Now he works here as an engineer in our Business Management Office. While his father was an avid photographer, Erik didn’t have much interest in photography until recently.

Rather than merely writing his niece and nephew, he decided that it would be more fun to show them photos of the things he was seeing while he was out and around the park with his spotting scope. When he ran across a new photo technique called digiscoping, he decided to give it a try.

The process is simple. Hold a digital camera up to the eyepiece of a spotting scope and take several photos. It sometimes takes several to get a couple of good images. Once Erik saw my email calling for photos from staff, he decided to share his photos with all of us as well as with his niece and nephew.
