This Month in Yellowstone
Elk Browsing

On December 10th and 11th, Bob Landis was shooting video related to aspen tree recovery in Yellowstone National Park.

The two elk in the video are feeding on saplings in an aspen grove. The suckers that come up from these saplings every year would have the opportunity to mature if left alone, however, the elk find the highly nutritious buds irresistible during the winter months.

As the elk population is reduced through wolf predation, our scientists are watching the aspen groves to see if they begin to recover.
