This Month in Yellowstone
Nez Perce Memorial

Woman with basket hat.
Angel McFarland Sobotta wears traditional Nez Perce regalia including a basketry hat with eagle feathers and a garment embellished with cowry shells. The shells were a trade item coming to the Nez Perce from the coast. Ms. Sobotta is a descendant of Wottolen. He and Peopeo Tholekt (Bird Alighting) were wounded in the battle of Camas Meadows before coming into Yellowstone National Park. Peopeo Tholekt was one of the band leaders that came through the park in 1877.
