These photos were taken by Diane Chalfant, Chief of Interpretation, during a tour of the Canyon Visitor Education Center construction project on April 27, 2005. Construction began last year and is scheduled for completion in late summer 2006. The facility will provide information, orientation, and interpretive & educational services for park visitors.
The exhibits in the new visitor education center will focus on the park's geologic story. Yellowstone is one of the most geologically dynamic areas on Earth, and is, in fact, one of the Earth's largest active volcanoes. This geologic activity not only powers the park's famous hydrothermal features, it also affects the entire area, from the landsape to the lifeforms found here. The new facility was funded through recreation fee demonstration monies.
