CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congratulations -- it's a bull elk with antlers!
You selected the correct antlers for your
BULL ELK.

FUN FACTS ABOUT ELK:

  • While not commonly used, the proper term for a group of elk is a 'gang'. I'll bet your teacher doesn't know that!

  • The other common name for elk is wapiti. It is a Shawnee Indian word that means "white-rumped deer".

  • Elk are considered the same species as the 'red deer' that are found in Europe and they are able to interbreed with them and produce fertile offspring.

  • The largest elk ever recorded weighed about 1000 lbs. An average healthy bull will most often not exceed 700 lbs in weight.

  • During the rut, when big bulls are gathering their harems for mating purposes, a loud, variably pitched, bugling call is heard throughout the park. This bugle serves as a warning and challenge to other bulls.

  • If a second bull responds to a bugle, the two bulls will likely engage in a battle, crashing their antlers together and then pushing and wrestling until the weaker one gallops off. The winner of the battle gets to claim the harem of cows.

  • Elk have antlers, not horns. This link will teach you the difference between antlers and horns.
