The Lily was started in 1849 as a monthly temperance newspaper published in Seneca Falls by Amelia Bloomer. It rapidly became a voice for Stanton in her advocacy for women's rights, as well as a general source of information on related concerns. Though some sources report The Lily was the first newspaper in the United States owned and operated by a woman, others existed going back to the Eighteenth Century.
