Smith Family Album


Gerrit Smith was extermely wealthy, and was reported to have given over $8 million to the various causes he supported, especially those related to the abolition of slavery. He also saw to the preservation of a visual record, having commissioned many portraits, and photographs, including several copper dauguerrotypes. The Matthew Brady portrait hangs at the Madison County Historical Society in Oneida, New York, where many of the images in this Gallery are found. A larger portion of the portrait is on the Gerrit Smith webpage.
